The word harassment portrays a repetitive deliberate behavior which is meant to make a person bother and irritated. The sexual harassment indicates the enduring and undesirable sexual approaches. Sexual harassment is considered as a crime as per the law. It affects a person’s personal as well as professional life. Types of Sexual Harassment:
In general, we have always observed the physical conduct as sexual harassment but let me tell you that it is not only bound to this but some more acts that we usually ignore in our daily hustles and bustles of life. Listed down are few of the actions that also fall into the category of sexual harassment which can result in declining performance in employees work and can also develop an unfriendly and antagonistic work environment. Those include: · Abuse or rhetorical harassment which includes such emails or messages which shows erotic occurrences or exposing distinctive material in either way. · Physical tactics which includes rape, sexual assaults, dabbing or smearing, flicking. · Humiliating mindset which consists of staring a person’s physique. · Retaliation includes the buzz and scandals regarding any person either man or woman. Types of Harassers: There are various categories of harassers out of which few are quoted below. · Rapacious Harasser who gets excited by embarrassing and humbling others. · Social Harasser who seems to be atrocious in their dogmatist behavior in relation with their peers, colleagues etc. · Roadway harasser who can be found anywhere and are strangers. These harassers may humiliate either verbally or by patting. Effects of Sexual Harassment: The effect of sexual harassment on a victim can be worse than we can ever thought of. It can either be psychological, academics, professional, financial and social effects. The prevailing upshots that we usually see are the loss of confidence and trust in environment where such disgraceful conducts take place. Moreover, it also affects one’s health and increases stress, denigration of one’s character and position, lack of performance either in academics or at workplace. Law against Sexual harassment: This humiliating and threatening act is considered to be a Crime as per the Criminal Law (Amended) 2010 in Pakistan. Previously, there was no such law with respect to this demeaning conduct. None of the laws had provided a clear and precise definition of sexual harassment. But then in 2010, the Government of Pakistan executed a law which called for “The Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010.” The law has been apportioned in two parts. Part (I) refers to the procedures of forming an inquiry committee whereas Part (II) of the Act refers to the security and safety to be provided to the woman against harassment at workplace. Punishment: If the victim decides to take a legal action and lodged a complaint in the Police Station then as per the law the act has been called for 3 years imprisonment or a penalty not less than PKR 500K or both for the harasser. If an accusation is charged not beyond the organization, then either of the penalties or more than one penalty is to be implemented on the accused. · Demotion of that particular person or employee who is being held accountable for. · Permanent expulsion from the service. · Deprivation of the increments, promotions for a specific period of time. · Admonishing or warn strictly to the harasser. The woman, who undergoes with such situations, should take a step for their rights. And I fully understand and agree that when we stand up and make ourselves heard then it is the most crucial time and we might end up thinking that it had been better if we kept quiet. But believe me, this is the only way to stop these demeaning crimes and speaking ourselves out for the betterment and for the sake of punishing the accused and harassers. I pray to Almighty ALLAH that HE always keeps us safe and in HIS protection. (So be it!)
